Knots, Splices and Rope Work

by A. Hyatt Verrill

Note. Rope-strength tables are for natural-fiber rope of the period. Never use them to rate modern synthetic rope for climbing, rescue or lifting loads over people.

Verrill wrote for “travellers, campers, yachtsmen, Boy Scouts and all others having to use or handle ropes”, and the 150-odd line drawings show each knot being tied and finished. Knots have not changed in a century, so this remains a sound reference.

Start with our note on the few knots worth learning first, then use Verrill for everything else.
