Backwoods Surgery & Medicine

by Charles Stuart Moody, M.D.

Historical text. HISTORICAL MEDICINE, written in 1910. Many treatments and drugs described here (including the snakebite treatments) are now known to be useless or harmful. Read it for history and context; follow current first-aid guidance in our field notes.

Dr. Moody wrote for hunters and campers days away from a doctor, which is exactly the situation preppers plan for. His advice on recognizing fractures and improvising splints and bandages is still useful context. His drug list and snakebite chapter are a window into 1910 medicine and should not be followed.

For current guidance, see our field medicine notes, especially stopping severe bleeding and snakebite.
